Johns Island is an island in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States, and is the largest island in the state of South Carolina. Johns Island is bordered by the Wadmalaw, Seabrook, Kiawah, Edisto, Folly, and James islands; the Stono and Kiawah rivers separate Johns Island from its border islands. It is the fourth-largest island on the US east coast, surpassed only by Long Island, Mount Desert Island and Martha's Vineyard. Johns Island is 84 square miles in area, with a population of between 20 and 30,000. Johns Island was named after Saint John the Baptist from the parish in Barbados by the first English colonial settlers on the island, who had come from there.
Johns Island is the largest island in South Carolina and is home to several historical landmarks. Johns Island was the site of the first shots fired in the American Civil War at the Battle of Secessionville. The island is home to the Charleston Tea Plantation, the only tea plantation in North America. Roughly one-third of the island is within the city limits of Charleston. The island is home to the Angel Oak, a Southern live oak tree estimated to be 400–1500 years old and named for Justus Angel, nineteenth century owner of the land on which it stands. The agricultural heritage of the island continues to thrive. Local farmers such as Ambrose Farms, Legare Farms, and Fields Farms grow crops for local markets and restaurants. It is also known for its farms, producing tomatoes and numerous other agricultural products.
The island is home to scores of wildlife species, including deer, alligators, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, otters and wild hogs. The rivers and marshes abound with fish and shellfish, especially oysters, and dolphins. The number of bird species is in the hundreds. They include bald eagles, osprey, wild turkeys, owls, hawks, herons, egrets and ducks. The flora is abundant, with many native and imported species.
The population of Johns Island is growing. Between 2000 and 2010 the island’s population grew by 50%, the largest increase in the history of the island. This trend is expected to continue but numerous conservation organizations are striving for ecologically friendly growth. The island’s proximity to downtown Charleston and its scenic property have made it an active location for development. Numerous high density developments have been created in parts of the island zoned into the City of Charleston. Most of the island still rests within the jurisdiction of Charleston County. Several movies have been filmed on the island, including The Notebook (2004).
Indigo Hall's set of three, three story condo complexes are located just in front of the gated community of the Kiawah River Estates off the Betsy Kerrison Parkway, approximately 16 miles south of Route 17. Originally a cotton and indigo plantation, the neighborhood was developed in the early 1990s as Hope Plantation. In late 2005 it was rebranded as Kiawah River Estates. However, its association with the Kiawah Island Resort, its location directly south (across the marsh) from Kiawah, and its history as a former indigo plantation have resulted in changing names in recent years. The Indigo Hall condos were built in the early 2000’s, with the last building built in 2009. Two more are in the planning stages. The complex has a large, community pool with chairs and tables, that is open seasonally. It also operates a community room that can be used for meetings and parties on a planned basis.
Located on the far side of Johns Island, Indigo Hall at the Kiawah River Estates is known for its seclusion and privacy. Although it’s about a 20-30 minute drive from Downtown Charleston, residents have plenty of options for entertainment located within 10 minutes such as Freshfields Village, Bohicket Marina, the public Beachwalker Park on Kiawah, and Mullet Hall Equestrian Center. There are shopping and restaurant options at Freshfields Village, and local Johns Island favorites such as Wild Olive, Royal Tern and Beans and Barley, are a slightly longer drive to get back to Maybank Highway.
In addition to its own amenities, Kiawah River Estates residents have access to the exclusive Governor’s Club at Kiawah Island Resort. This is the only opportunity to join the Governor’s Club without living behind the gates of Kiawah. Membership includes golf, tennis, pool and/or social categories. All levels include access to each of four Kiawah Island Golf Resort pools and optional access to The Sanctuary indoor pool. In addition to guest allowances, you may also add non-resident family members to pool membership. There is no initiation fee to join the Governor’s Club and there is an annual membership fee. Members also enjoy shopping and dining discounts and private beach access.
